So much for that
For some reason, I went to bed last night thinking that I’d already posted my Wardrobe Wednesday. I don’t know why, but I guess the world will keep turning even when I’m really, really wrong about my own activities. Ho hum.
Today’s post features my little girl, who is ever so slightly less a little girl now that she’s celebrated a birthday. I know, it’s not like a one-year-old isn’t still a little girl, but holy buckets, what a year it’s been! She went from a helpless mush of flesh to a running, babbling, dancing girl.
Her birthday party was two days after her actual birthday, because that’s when the closest Saturday happened to be. D.L.’s favorite and only auntie went shopping and picked out the perfect outfit to be worn at the party, and made me swear not to dress her in it until the big day. It was about six weeks ahead of time, so I was a little concerned about it fitting, but it worked out really well. Her dress, shirt, and tights all matched. My mother-in-law had also purchased some purple Croc-alikes, but D.L. couldn’t walk in them, so that was a no-go. No one commented on her non-matching brown shoes.
The road and sidewalk were decorated with flags so that everyone could find the party. It might seem strange to my non-Danish readers, but in Denmark it’s totally normal to put Danish flags all over everything on birthdays and it doesn’t have anything like the wacky, jingoistic connotations that such a display of American flags might convey. D.L. picked one up and started walking around with it, and although she couldn’t possibly understand what a flag is or represents, it was awfully cute.
And check out the pocket on the side of the dress. Why don’t I have any cool pockets like that?
Tetrominos make good floors
I’m going to kinda cheat today. I’ve already written about our Tetris floor, but I’ve never Money Mondayed it. I just thought I’d call everyone’s attention back to it, because some of you may have missed it. Despite some claims that we would find the floor too busy, that we’d get sick of it, and so on, we still love our Tetris floor and we get lots of compliments on it from all kinds of people, including those who didn’t realize it had anything to do with a video game. It’s just a really nice-looking floor, and I think it was worth every penny. When we move into a larger place, I’d like a Tetris floor there too. I hope you’ll check out the other page for lots of pics and a video of the installation. It’s been a while since I made that page, so if anything is broken now, let me know and I’ll do my best to fix it.
I’m using Ecto to post this, because MarsEdit will only let me drag in one image at a time. This is only marginally annoying for this blog, but it’s a deal-breaker for my scrapping blog, and I’d like to use the same program for both. I’m not 100% happy with Ecto yet, but I’m hoping I’ll figure some stuff out and grow to love it. It’s too early to tell right now. If any Mac user out there would like to sell me on their blogging software, tell me all about it. Maybe it can be a future Money Monday feature.
hi again
My parents flew back to Florida yesterday morning. I took the day off, because 10 days of visit from parents means you get a day off when they leave. Now I’m back! I’m trying out a little thing called MarsEdit instead of going to the Blogger site to publish. We’ll see what I think of it. I just downloaded it about one minute ago, so no opinion yet. I’m hoping to hop right back into my regular schedule for Money Monday. Sorry, no S-train Saturday this week. I have a baby shower to go to tomorrow, and two events in one weekend, especially the weekend after the 10 days of parent visit, is just too much. I’ve got a few things to share regarding the visit and my daughter’s birthday, but that’ll wait. Until next time….
one year ago
One year ago, I was in labor. To everyone who told me I would miss being pregnant… to everyone who said babies were easier on the inside than the outside… to everyone who said that babies are miracles, giving birth is beautiful, and/or nothing matters except a healthy baby… you can stuff it.
Today, I’m wearing a smile because I have the world’s most perfect daughter and I’d do it all again just for her. (But I’m awfully glad I don’t have to.)
Panodil
In Denmark, there’s an OTC pain killer called Panodil. I bought a bottle because my midwife said it was the only one that was safe to take while pregnant. I didn’t actually have any painkillers around before that, and didn’t think much about having them around, but I bought them because I didn’t want to forget which kind it was I could take if I needed them.
un-Wardrobe Wednesday
I try to bring a little variety to my Wardrobe Wednesdays so they aren’t all about Dagmar, but her birthday’s coming up so … everyone pay attention to my girl. In the very early days of her life, Dagmar didn’t delve much into her wardrobe. She had plenty of stuff in her wardrobe, but she didn’t really use it much. My mother even complained that she was naked all the time. She didn’t seem to mind. She came out naked, and that’s pretty much all she knew up until then. She did wear diapers, but she wasn’t particularly keen on them. We changed them frequently, and she peed in the sink a lot. So here is my tribute to those early days. Here’s my girlie, at about 2 days old. I’m not sure she’d even had clothes on at all at this point. It was all about that blanket.
